A Twist on Teaching Philanthropy

NGPF Fellow Sue Suttich of Tigard High School (Tigard, OR) wrote in with this awesome spin she put on our Philanthropy lesson and materials (found in the Mini Units section of our website), just in time for the winter holidays! Read on to hear Sue's creative idea for her sports marketing class.

I wanted to share with you a way I have used your Charity/Philanthropy project. I think it is a good way to show teachers your projects can fit into any curriculum not just personal finance and economics classes.

 
I just used the Charity project in my sports marketing class. We discussed the NFL's "Cleats for Cause" in class. We watched their videos on the charities they picked and why (amazing, tear-jerking). Watch the Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott who does one for colon cancer because his mother died of it and another from the Bengals tight end Carols Dunlap who picked bullying because of a Cincinnati 8-year-old Gabriel Taye who committed suicide.
 
 
 
Then we talked about Charities and how do you know they do what they say they do. This brought up Charity Navigator.
 
Anyway it was a really powerful and fun project and we will be putting the shoes "up for auction" tomorrow in class and the shoe that gets the highest bid gets extra credit!
